Understanding Residential Delivery Services and What to Expect

What is a Residential Delivery?
A Residential Delivery is selected as a service anytime you are shipping to or from a residential property.

Why the LTL Carriers Consider This a Service and What Does It Include?
Deliveries into residential areas can be a little tricky. Typically, the LTL carriers will use smaller trucks equipped with liftgates to access a residential area. They will arrive, give you a second to inspect the freight for damages, then they will have you sign a copy of the POD or Proof of Delivery stating you have received the freight.
What Happens with a Residential Delivery?
Adding an Appointment service is always necessary with a Residential Delivery. They will call the receiver 1-2 days prior and set up a 2-4 window. It can be up to an 8 hour window depending on the terminal's route for the day.
The receiver will need to be present at the residence during this window and prepared to receive the freight.
The driver will arrive ready for the receiver to either offload the freight utilizing their own equipment such as a forklift, or if no equipment is available (typically the most common situation, a Liftgate service will need to be selected at the time of quoting) the driver will lower the freight near the front curb of the house.
The driver will provide a copy of the POD for the receiver to sign. This document will state that the freight has been received in "good order" and this document alleviates the carrier from most claims should damage be found later. When signing a POD if damages are present, the receiver will have the choice to either reject or accept the freight and make notations on the POD of all visible damages. (It's preferred the receiver reject for any significant damages visible at the time of delivery, see our CLAIMS and Damages section for more information)
Things to Consider When Delivering to a Residential Location:
Making sure your receiver knows what to expect prior to and during the delivery.
Planning on providing space for a large truck to arrive at their house on the day of delivery.
Having a way to bring the freight indoors if the Inside Delivery service has not been selected at the time of quoting and booking.
Being able to stay home the day of the appointment.
